What Your Menstrual Cycle Is Telling You (and How Acupuncture Can Help)

Your menstrual cycle is more than just your period, it’s a reflection of how your body is functioning as a whole. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the cycle is considered a vital sign, offering insight into your hormones, nervous system, digestion, stress levels, and overall health.

During your intake, I’ll ask detailed questions about your specific cycle (including timing, flow, symptoms, and when those symptoms show up) along with things like energy, mood, sleep, digestion, and stress. We look at patterns across the month, not just one experience in isolation, and connect the dots between your cycle and your overall health. This helps us create treatment that’s truly tailored to your body, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

How Chinese Medicine Views the Menstrual Cycle

Health is about flow... the smooth movement of blood, qi, and hormones throughout the month. When this flow is supported, the cycle tends to move with more ease. When it’s disrupted by stress, burnout, overwork, or depletion, the body has a harder time transitioning smoothly from one phase to the next.

Rather than focusing only on diagnoses, we look at patterns:

  • How the cycle moves over time

  • Where things feel smooth versus strained

  • What the body is asking for in each phase

The Four Phases of the Cycle

Phase 1: Menstruation (Your Period)

What’s happening energetically:
We start tracking at the most Yin point of your cycle. This phase is about release and clearing. Blood moves downward and outward, allowing the body to let go and reset for the next cycle.

When there is balance:
You may feel a sense of relief or clearing, both physically and emotionally, as your body lets go and makes space for what comes next.

When things are out of balance:
Release can feel incomplete or effortful, and the body may have a harder time transitioning fully into the next phase.

How acupuncture helps:
Acupuncture supports healthy circulation and blood flow, as well as aiding the body to efficiency release so the cycle can move forward.

Phase 2: Follicular Phase (After Your Period)

What’s happening energetically:
This is a rebuilding phase. The body shifts from release to restoration, replenishing blood and resources while preparing for ovulation.

When there is balance:
Energy gradually returns, thinking feels clearer, and the body feels like it’s rebuilding steadily.

When things are out of balance:
The body may feel slow to recover or like it’s running on empty as it tries to rebuild without enough support.

How acupuncture helps:
Acupuncture supports blood building, hormone production, and recovery so the body has what it needs to move confidently into ovulation.

Phase 3: Ovulation

What’s happening energetically:
Ovulation is the peak yang of the cycle. Energy and hormones rise, and communication between the brain, ovaries, and uterus is especially important.

When there is balance:
You may feel more outgoing, energized, social, and clear (this is often when people feel most like themselves.)

When things are out of balance:
That outward energy can feel blocked or overstimulating, especially when stress interferes with hormonal and nervous system signaling.

How acupuncture helps:
Acupuncture supports smooth communication between systems and helps regulate stress so ovulation can happen with more ease.

Phase 4: Luteal Phase (Before Your Period)

What’s happening energetically:
This phase is about consolidation and holding. The body turns inward, preparing either to support a pregnancy or to transition back into menstruation.

When there is balance:
You may feel grounded, focused, and more introspective, with a natural desire to slow down.

When things are out of balance:
Internal pressure can build, making this phase feel emotionally or physically heavier than it needs to be. This is a common time for people to get cramps, headaches, breast tenderness, and fatigue.

How acupuncture helps:
Acupuncture calms the nervous system, supports hormonal balance, and helps the body transition smoothly to get ready for the next period.
